Weeding bad Habits
The last few days I was working in the garden a lot and all I did was pulling weeds. Why do weeds grow so much faster than other plants? Do they have stronger roots, are they more persistent, or have they traits of taking over being egotistic, bullies and stubborn……
Most of them are harmless, (like Dandelions, I actually bring those leaves inside to eat in my salad) they just compete with my other plants for water, nutrients and light. Weeds make life difficult for plants I would rather have.
So I am patiently grabbing and pulling one weed after the other and make space for the beautiful flowers, herbs and vegetables to grow.
Isn’t it the same with bad habits? Aren’t the bad habits taking over your life so much faster then a good habit? Isn’t it so difficult to let go of them?
Bad habits interrupt your life and prevent you from accomplishing your goals. They jeopardize your health — both mentally and physically. And they waste your time and energy. So why do we still do them? And most importantly, is there anything we can do about it?
What causes bad habits?
Most of the time, bad habits are simply a way of dealing with sadness, loneliness, stress and boredom. Everything from eating too much sugar, or overspending on a shopping spree, or drinking to much, or being on the internet can be simply a response to all of the above situations.
In my Yoga detox classes I always help people to replace bad habits with good ones. That provides my students with good reasons to let go and break bad habits. Often they come back after just one week and say: “I never thought I would be able to change and let go, but it was easier than I imagined.” With patience, knowledge and willpower we are able to build up long lasting changes, which are really upgrades our lives.
Whatever it is and whatever we are dealing with, we all need to have a plan for what we will do instead of our bad habits.
I invite you to consider an emotional and bodily cleansing this summer, using traditional asanas to clear your mind and process stuck emotions. Let’s focus on clearing and cleansing ourselves from the limiting dynamics of anger, fear, grief, worry and bad habits to make space for the higher energies of joy, love, freedom, peace and health.
The new Yoga Detox and Nourish workshop starts in July to help you lose bad habits, feel better, have more energy, establish a healthy lifestyle and as a bonus side effect…to lose some weight!
The yoga and detox class provided me with a new education on how to nourish my body and mind. I have shed 20 pounds, feel more energy, have increased my positive mood, and feel stronger in my yoga practice. I learned which nutrients my body needs to thrive and feel satisfied, and I learned which processed foods are depleting my energy and sabotaging my health. I loved receiving new recipes and information on how to make healthy changes in my everyday life. Sonja’s years of researching and living what she is teaching is a true gift that she shares with the class. I felt completely supported and set up for success during the class and after. I took the class multiple times because the structure and accountable, while being loving and supportive, is exactly what I need in order to make life changes. I was able to make changes in the way I shop and cook for my family that influenced everyone. My teenage daughter experienced a decrease in knee pain and improved mood.” ~Amy M. ~
